Recycling in multi-family housing units poses a unique challenge for many communities. Oftentimes, this type of property is categorized as commercial and does not receive the same residential recycling services as single-family-homes. This results in waste disposal challenges for tenants and despite educational outreach efforts by landlords, tenant turnover is high which poses problems of its own.

The Centre Region’s waste stream analysis showed that 80% of solid waste comes from the commercial sector. In efforts to divert waste from the landfills, the Borough has created educational outreach campaigns and programs in accordance with our 2022 Sustainability Plan goals. We believe that through improved educational outreach and collaboration between landlords, tenants, and waste authorities, the percentage of solid waste entering the landfills for our community can be decreased.

WE NEED YOUR INPUT! Two surveys have been created regarding waste reduction practices and services in multi-family housing units. Please fill the forms out below. Contact jfields@statecollegepa.us if you have any questions!

All townships in the Centre Region have been certified by the Pennsylvania Municipal League as a Sustainable Community. In efforts to make our community more resilient, the Centre Region Resilience Plan has been developed to mitigate the region’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.
