What is Car Free Day?
Car Free Day is a worldwide event held every September 22nd that encourages greener methods of travel rather than driving alone by car. Other forms of transportation which are more environmentally friendly include riding the bus, carpooling/vanpooling, biking, walking, or telework if possible.
Why Car Free Day?
The goal of Car Free Day is to reduce our carbon footprint. State College was declared a Climate Protection Community per Resolution 944 and as a result, committed the Borough to a Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction strategy. In an effort to encourage sustainable transportation, the Borough is promoting Car Free Day and invites all members of the community to participate.
Choosing to participate in more sustainable types of travel reduces harmful green house gas emissions and traffic congestion. The more people who travel using bikes, buses, carpools, or vanpools, the fewer pollutants are released into the atmosphere.
How can I participate?
All are welcome and we encourage you to take the Car Free Day pledge below. Then choose the travel method that works best for you!
